Is my jewelry silver or silver plated?
One of the questions I've been asked most is how to tell if the jewelry you have is silver or silver-plated.
There are two tips that are super simple and work perfectly:
1. Magnet:
If you don't have a magnet, you can use the one that comes with the refrigerator magnet.
Silver-plated jewelry is generally made of non-precious metals like brass or nickel. When you place a magnet on the jewelry, it will adhere like any other metal.
Silver jewelry, on the other hand, is made from an alloy with copper, so it does not have magnetic properties.
When you place the magnet on the jewel, nothing will happen.
2. Ice:
Silver, whether 925 or 950, has high thermal conductivity.
If you take two ice cubes, place the silver jewelry in one and the gold-plated jewelry in the other. What you'll see is that the silver jewelry sinks into the ice, while the gold-plated jewelry takes longer to sink.
You can find other techniques to check this on the internet, but I don't recommend them, as they involve applying chemicals, chlorine, and other things that could permanently damage your jewelry.
